The Uyuni Salt Flats are amazing during the wet season – this is the time when you are most likely to see the famous “ground reflects sky” effect. However, the rain causes some logistical problems for tours as it floods many parts of the salt flats that are accessible when it is dry. This page details the changes to the itinerary of the San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni 3 Day Tour (Budget – One Way to Uyuni) and the San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni Tour (Budget) – 4 Days Roundtrip. The salt flats after rain
07:30 pick up at your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama and drive to the Hito Cajon border of Chile and Bolivia. The touring begins with visits to Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, at the base of the Licancabur Volcano. Next up is a visit to the Salvador Dali Rock Desert, then to the Sol de Mañana geysers and nearby hot springs for a chance to relax and soak. The group will then go to Laguna Colorada, where it is usual possible to see thousands of flamingos! The final stops of the day are at the Arbol de Piedra (Stone Tree) and the Capina Lagoon. Tonight’s dinner and lodging is in a hostel in Villa Mar.
After an early breakfast, the group will visit ancient cave paintings! Next up is a visit to Valle de las Rocas, where there are strange rock formations created by years of wind erosion. They have shapes that famously resemble la Copa Mundial (the World Cup), a lost city, animals, and many other shapes. After this, you will visit Black Lagoon, which is home to many altiplanic fauna, including tawas and geese. In this area, you will also get a chance to see a large fresh water waterfall. In the afternoon, you will visit some typical altiplanic communities for a chance to see how the locals live around the salt flats; here, you will also have a chance to see llamas and alpacas! The day ends in Uyuni city, with lodging in a basic hostel.
Today begins very early with a trip to the Uyuni Salt Flats for an absolutely unforgettable sunrise! After spending a good amount of time on the salt flats, you will visit the artisan town of Colchani, where you will have a chance to shop and also learn about the salt extraction process. The final sight of the tour is the Cementerio de Trenes (Train Cemetery). If you are on the one way tour, the tour ends in Uyuni in the afternoon.
If you are on the roundtrip tour, there will be a break in Uyuni and then you will begin the drive back towards San Pedro. You will spend the night in a basic hostel.
You will leave early today (around 5:00am) and drive about 4 hours to the border, cross to Chile, then take a shared bus back to San Pedro, arriving around 12:00 (noon).
