Itinerary

Nov 11 – Pick up at Cusco airport & Guided transfer to Sacred Valley with stops along the way.

From the airport, depart for the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas with your guide.  Our first stop is the Awanacancha, to meet the region’s adorable camelids.  Feed & learn about alpacas, guanacos and a variety of llamas.   You’ll then learn about traditional weaving and natural dyes, before continuing to the village of Pisac, where we visit a stunning Inca fortress and temple overlooking the valley.  Next, descend to browse in a traditional market.  After a delicious lunch, continue to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few remaining places in Peru that retains its original Incan urban planning.  You’ll note still-functioning street canals, multi-family houses with secret interior courtyards and iconic Incan trapezoidal doors. We’ll visit the Incan fortress perched on the mountainside, and learn about the pivotal Incan battle fought here, before checking into your comfortable hotel for the evening.

Nov 12 – Guided Exploration of Sacred Valley.

Morning departure for the Sacred Valley.  We’ll stop in the village of Chinchero to learn about and observe traditional weaving, then head to the colonial town of Maras, where we`ll explore the pretty town and head off on an easy hike toward the sunken, circular terraces of Moray, thought to be a site of agricultural research for the Incas.  Next, continue to the Salineras.  The Salineras are a cluster of hundreds of spring-fed, artisanal salt pools cascading down a steep hillside, and have been in use since before the arrival of the Incas in the area.   You’ll have the opportunity to observe salt harvesting in the manner it has been done for hundreds of years.  After breaking for a scenic picnic lunch, we continue to the original Inca town of Ollantaytambo to explore the town’s Inca fortress (if you didn’t the day before).  Overnight in Ollantaytambo.

Nov 13 – Free morning in Ollantaytambo & afternoon train to Aguas Calientes.

Free morning in Ollantaytambo to sleep in, relax, and explore on your own.  In the early afternoon, depart on  scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, the town located at the base of Machu Picchu.  You’ll have the evening to visit the local hotsprings and prepare for Machu Picchu the following day.

Nov 14 – Machu Picchu and Transfer to Cusco

This morning you will wake up early to catch the bus, which will work its way up a series of switchbacks to the entrance of Machu Picchu.  As you come around the corner, the clouds will part, and you will catch a glimpse of the ruins of the once great empire.  Your private guide will lead you around the ruins as you visit the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple, the Intihuatana stone, and much more, learning about their significance all along the way (private tour).

After your tour, hike Machu Picchu Mountain.  It is believed that Inca priests performed special rituals at the summit of this sacred mountain.  Your approximately 3.5 hour round trip hike will take you up to a height of 10,111 feet, where you will have incredible views of Machu Picchu below.  Along the trail, be sure to take in all the lush jungle vegetation as you return back down to Machu Picchu.

After your hike, you will have plenty of free time to explore the ruins and take in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Urubamba River below.

In the afternoon, return to Cusco by train and private transfer to your comfortable located in the historic neighborhood of San Blas.
