From the airport, depart for the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas with your guide. Our first stop is the Awanacancha, to meet the region’s adorable camelids. Feed & learn about alpacas, guanacos and a variety of llamas. You’ll then learn about traditional weaving and natural dyes, before continuing to the village of Pisac, where we visit a stunning Inca fortress and temple overlooking the valley. Next, descend to browse in a traditional market. After a delicious lunch, continue to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few remaining places in Peru that retains its original Incan urban planning. You’ll note still-functioning street canals, multi-family houses with secret interior courtyards and iconic Incan trapezoidal doors. We’ll visit the Incan fortress perched on the mountainside, and learn about the pivotal Incan battle fought here, before checking into your comfortable hotel for the evening.
Morning departure for the Sacred Valley. We’ll stop in the village of Chinchero to learn about and observe traditional weaving, then head to the colonial town of Maras, where we`ll explore the pretty town and head off on an easy hike toward the sunken, circular terraces of Moray, thought to be a site of agricultural research for the Incas. Next, continue to the Salineras. The Salineras are a cluster of hundreds of spring-fed, artisanal salt pools cascading down a steep hillside, and have been in use since before the arrival of the Incas in the area. You’ll have the opportunity to observe salt harvesting in the manner it has been done for hundreds of years. After breaking for a scenic picnic lunch, we continue to the original Inca town of Ollantaytambo to explore the town’s Inca fortress (if you didn’t the day before). Overnight in Ollantaytambo.
Free morning in Ollantaytambo to sleep in, relax, and explore on your own. In the early afternoon, depart on scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, the town located at the base of Machu Picchu. You’ll have the evening to visit the local hotsprings and prepare for Machu Picchu the following day.
