This native town was once where “exchange transactions” took place. In this type of transaction, customers would exchange one good for another instead of using currency. On Sunday, the main attraction is a mass celebrated in Quechua and conducted in Spanish. It is attended by the mayors and their attendants who play traditional musical instruments called “pututos.”

After a typical Peruvian lunch in the Sacred Valley, you’ll visit the Inca Fortress of Ollantaytambo that once protected the entrance to this part of the Valley from possible invasion from the other tribes. Originally the royal estate of Emperor Pachakuteq during the Inca Empire, this site later served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui in the Inca’s final rebellion against the Spanish. In the afternoon, you’ll head back to Cusco.

Later, the motor boat trip will continue on to Amantani Island. This island is inhabited by Quechua-speaking natives still governed by their ancient traditions and who specialize in the production of ceramics and textiles.
