For the adventurous and strong spirited, embark on a journey from Xela to Lake Atitlan while experiencing indigenous culture, breathtaking views and create a trip to remember!
This tour will take you from Quetzaltenango to San Pedro La Laguna on one of Guatemala’s most famous lakes – Lake Atitlan. This trek is a great experience for nature lovers as you will get to take in the sights of beautiful mountain ranges and dense rain forests.
3 Days
Day 1
The tour will start from being picked up at your point of residence. From that point, we will hike beginning from Xela and end in Cantel, one of the most beautiful municipalities of Quetzaltenango about 2350 meters above ground. From that point, after about 3 hours of uphill hiking, we will reach the highest point of the hike (2950m).
We will then enjoy breakfast and enjoy a spectacular spanning view. You will be able to take in the lagoon, Atitlan Volcano among other ranges. At that point, we will descend for about two hours and continue onto a relatively flat point of the hike to return to an altitude of 2100 meters.
Note: At this point we will have lunch and continue hiking for about 3 hours and stay overnight at a hostel located behind the Nahualate river.
Day 2
This day is the most arduous of the journey. We will start with breakfast at 6:30am and begin the journey at 7:30am. For about 2 hours we will descend into a natural surrounding of pine trees and coffee farms. From that point we will descend into the most difficult section of the route (30 minutes, slippery route) and finally arrive at the Nahualate river at an altitude of 1400 meters. After that point we will continue to ascend on an easier section for about 3 hours to reach an altitude of 2100 meters and have lunch.
After having lunch, we will head to Santa Clara La Laguna which takes approximately 1.5 hours and sleep overnight in an indigenous home of a Quiche family.
Note:Â One day 2, we have our lunch in Santa Clara la Laguna.
Day 3
To be able to see the beautiful sunrise from the viewpoint of Santa Clara La Laguna we will wake up at 5:30am. Situated 5 minutes from the home.
Afterwards, we will have breakfast and begin the descent which takes around 3 hours to head to a mountain known as El Rostro Maya, situated in San Juan La Laguna.
Note 1: for safety matters we sleep in the house of an indigenous family. Apart of being a small economic support, we are having a good time with them as well.
Departure time: Every day at 6:00 am
Difficulty:Â Difficult (the hike is moderate with some difficult parts but with equipment it becomes more difficult)
