Sacred Rainforest and Archaeological Tours: bathe in the fresh springs of Las Delicias Waterfall and explore the ancient Taino history through petroglyphs

Go back to approximately 800 AD and dip into the natural springs of Las Delicias Waterfall before discovering petroglyphs on our Archaeological tours.

  • Swim in the crystal clear natural springs of Las Delicias Waterfall.
  • Eat like a Puerto Rican with a creole BBQ lunch.
  • Discover the ancient world that lies in the history of the Zama Aqueduct Petroglyph Mural.

Tour Information

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: 8 am from your accommodation in San Juan metropolitan area.
  • Return: 4 pm (16:00) to your accommodation in San Juan metropolitan area.
  • Availability: this excursion is for a maximum of 6 travelers.

Having been picked up from your accommodation in San Juan, your transfer will take you through the central mountain town of Ciales, home to the highest mountain on the island. Take in your breathtaking surroundings, as the journey will take you winding through the central mountain region and into the Toro Negro Rainforest area.

As you pass through the Tres Picachos National Forest, you will near your first destination. At Las Delicias Waterfall you will have the chance to bathe in the crystal clear waters of this mountain spring. From your guide you will learn about why Puerto Rico can be considered a powerhouse of fresh water with over 4500 varying springs, rivers and other freshwater bodies. Take some time to relax and envelop yourself in the cascading waters that surround you.

Moving on from here, you will head to the Zama River. Enjoy your surroundings of magnificent flora and fauna, before taking a dip to refresh in the cool waters of the Zama River. Your guide will explain the history of the different farms that used to grow coffee in this area, as you take a quick refreshment break.

Put on your hiking shoes and get ready for a trek through the forest and up the mountain to the Zama Aquaduct Petroglyph Mural. Your guide, who holds a master’s degree in archaeology will explain the indigenous past of the island, their religious beliefs and their culture which led them to create over 30 petroglyphs, in this mural alone, that date back as far as 800 AD.

Having immersed yourself in the island’s vibrant past, your Creole BBQ lunch awaits back at the Zama River. To conclude your day of history, culture and exploration, you can enjoy local cuisine, cooked outdoors and take a dip in river to reinvigorate and stimulate your senses, bringing you back to reality
