Cusco to Wakra Pukara: The trip starts with an early morning departure for the province of Acomayo. The 2 hour drive to our trail head takes you through gorgeous countryside, sprinkled with lakes and tiny farms. In the first leg of the trek you’ll leave villages and herds of sheep behind, ascending past enormous stone formations, with incredible panoramic views.
You’ll break for lunch near a beautiful lake, then continue over rolling hills toward the ruins. You’ll be able to spot vicunas and vizcachas along the way, and by the early afternoon, Wakra Pukara comes into view. The ruins are built on a steep stone tower high above the Apurimac Canyon, and can be seen from quite a distance. You will arrive at camp at the base of the ruins around mid-afternoon, and will spend the rest of the day exploring Wakra Pukara and adjacent caves and ruins.
In the evening you’ll experience a traditional, freshly prepared dinner using local ingredients, then settle into your comfy tent for the evening, or sip a hot drink and enjoy the starry sky of the southern hemisphere.
