We take care of it all from door to door on this incredible Salkantay Trek 5 Days. You will be guided by an experienced local tour guide beside the snow-covered mountains of Salkantay and Humantay. Later on, the trail is surrounded by green mountains and includes beautiful waterfalls. This is a fantastic alternative trek to Machu Picchu, comparable with the traditional Inca trail. You will love the mix of natural beauty and archaeological sites.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Enjoy Gorgeous Views as You Hike Salkantay Pass
We will pick up you up at 4:30 am and take you in our private car to the beginning of the Salkantay Trek 5 Days at Soraypampa. Here, you will have some breakfast, surrounded by amazing views of the snow-capped mountains of Salkantay and Humantay. Then, you will hike for 3.5 hours uphill to the lunch spot.

After lunch, you will continue for 45 minutes to the mountain pass, located at an elevation of 15,091 feet (4,600 meters). When you get here, you will see stunning views and have the opportunity to take photos. Then, it will be time to go downhill for 3 hours to the campsite. You will enjoy tea and dinner there by 19:00 pm. The total walking today is 8 hours, 10 miles (16 kilometers).

Day 2 – Enter the Amazon and Admire Lush Vegetation Along the Way
Wake up time is at 5:00 am today, accompanied by coca tea, hot water for washing, and breakfast. Afterward, your Salkantay Trek 5 Days continues as you walk downhill for 3 hours through the beginning of the Amazon jungle to Chayhuay, the lunch location.

After lunch, walk on a dirt road past lovely waterfalls and gurgling streams. You can also see Spanish granadilla fruit plants, which is in the family of passion fruits. You will also see avocado trees and coffee plantations. Finally, you will arrive to the campsite by 18:00 pm, at 6,561 feet (2,000 feet). Today has another 8 hours, 10 miles (16 kilometers) of walking.

Day 3 – Discover the Lost Inca City of Patallacta and Camp with Views of Machu Picchu Mountain
We will wake you up with coca tea by 6:00 am. Then, get ready for 4 hours of uphill hiking to the lost Inca city called Patallacta. This place is covered by the vegetation of the green Andes. Along the road, you will enjoy outstanding views of valleys and snowy mountains.

Near Patallacta, you will see native trees covered in layers of hanging moss. Also, you can see a variety of plants called epiphytes. You will camp here by the grassy plain in tents. From the campsite, you will see rewarding views of Machu Picchu’s mountain. If your Salkantay Trek 5 Days is in the dry season, you will also see stars. The day’s hiking is 4.5 hours, 5 miles (8 kilometers).

Day 4 – Walk in the Valley near Machu Picchu to the Town of Aguas Calientes
Wake up to amazing views of Machu Picchu. Have breakfast, then continue on a dirt road downhill for 2 hours to the bottom of the mountain. Next, cross a beautiful hanging bridge. After his point, the road is easy and you will arrive to the lunch spot in 45 minutes.

After lunch, you will say goodbye to the cooking team, then hike beside the train tracks for 3 hours on the way to the town of Aguas Calientes. This trail is gentle, under the shade of trees, and has views of Machu Picchu. The total hiking for the day amounts to 6 hours, 7.5 miles (12 kilometers).

Day 5 – Explore Machu Picchu on a Guided Tour and Return to Cusco
Wake up at 4:30 am, have breakfast, then take the early bus for 30 minutes up to Machu Picchu. Then, enjoy a 2-hour professional guided tour of this historical location. After your tour, you will have a couple hours of free time to explore. During your free time, you can hike to the Sun Gate, a 2-hour round trip free hike. Another option is climbing Huaynapicchu Mountain (advance booking and additional fee required).

Then, take the bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and the train back to Ollantaytambo. After that, take a bus back to Cusco, arriving around 20:00 pm. Finally, your Salkantay Trek 5 Days comes to an end as we will drop you off at your hotel.

What to bring

  • Sleeping bag for temperatures down to 17ºF (-8ºC)
  • Warm clothes and layers for variable temperatures, especially at night (socks, gloves, scarf, wool hat, good hiking shoes)
  • Flashlight with extra batteries and chargers for electronic devices
  • Insect repellent, sunscreen, rain poncho/jacket
  • Extra water bottles to fill with drinking water along the way
  • Original passport and ISIC student card (if applicable)

Important notes

  • The total walking distance is 32 miles (52 kilometers).
  • On the last day, you have the option of climbing Huaynapicchu Mountain. If you want to do this, let us know at info@keteka.com, as advance booking and an additional fee are required.
  • You can rent hiking poles from the tour operator.
  • There are vegetarian, vegan, and special diet meals available upon request. Please let us know in advance at info@keteka.com.
