This Lares trek to the Maras Salt Mines and Machu Picchu makes for an unforgettable experience of nature, culture, and beauty! This more remote alternative to the Inca Trail takes you past stunning views of snow-capped Andes mountains. Get ready for an outstanding experience visiting the Maras Salt Mine, Moray ruins, and Machu Picchu. These Inca sights will fascinate you and take your breath away.
With your experienced local tour guide, you will also visit traditional Andean houses and learn about the Inca people. The descendants of the Inca still speak Quechua and continue ancient Inca customs.

Day 1 – Enjoy Breakfast beside Hot Springs and Meet Inca People at the Huaccawasi Campsite
We will pick you up at your hotel at 4:30 am and drive by private car for 2.5 hours to the starting point of the trek in Lares Province. Lares is famous for its hot springs with many deep and shallow pools. You will have breakfast beside the hot springs.
Then, you will start your trek with a 2-hour hike to the lunch spot. After lunch, you will hike for another 3 hours on a gentle uphill to the Huaccawasi campsite. Traditional Inca people live here and you will camp beside a traditional house. You will get to have tea and dinner with the Inca children. You are welcome to give gifts to the children. The total walking distance today is 6 hours, 7.5 miles (12 kilometers).
Day 2 – Climb to Condor Pass and Enjoy Lunch next to a Lagoon
We will wake you up at 5:30 am with some nice coca tea. The tea helps with the challenges of the high altitude. After a big breakfast, you will hike for 3-4 hours uphill to a huge mountain pass called Condor, which is located at an elevation of 15,092 feet (4600 meters). Here, you can take pictures of the mountains and lagoons.
Afterward, you will go downhill for 30 minutes to the lunch site, next to a lagoon. After a delicious lunch prepared by your professional chef, you will continue downhill for 2.5 hours to the Mantanay camping site. You will rest at the camp with tea and dinner. The total walking distance today is 7 hours, 8.7 miles (14 kilometers).
Day 3 – Admire Native Trees, Visit the Maras Salt Mines, and Take the Train to Ollantaytambo
After a 6:00 am wake-up and a good breakfast, you will walk 4 hours, 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) downhill to the lunch site, a place called Yanahura. Along the way, you will see native trees called Andean polelepis. The Incas used these trees to make wooden handcrafts.
In the afternoon, right after lunch, you will take a car to the Maras Salt Mines and the Moray Inca archaeological site. You will have around 3 hours to explore these magical places. After the Maras Salt Mines, you will drive to Ollantaytambo, have dinner, and take the 19:00 pm train to Aguas Calientes. There, you will stay the night in a hostel.
Day 4 – Tour Machu Picchu and Explore the Incredible Inca Ruins
The final day of your tour starts at 4:30 am with breakfast. Then, you will go to the bus terminal with your tour guide and take a 30-minute ride to Machu Picchu. You will have a 2-hour guided tour, then free time for a couple hours.
You have three options for your free time. First, you can a 1.5-hour round-trip hike to the Sun Gate for free. Second, you can hike up Huaynapicchu Mountain. This is a 2-hour round-trip hike. Entrance is limited, so advance booking an an additional cost apply. Third, you can take a 4-hour round-trip hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. This also requires advance notice and an additional fee.
Once you are ready, you will go back down to Aguas Calientes, take the train back to Ollantaytambo, and then take a car to Cusco, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
