Manu National Park is an outstanding UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve spanning over 10,000 square miles (17,000 sq. kilometers). Crossroads of the tropical Andes and the Amazon Basin, the park contains abundant, vibrant habitats and an outstanding array of flora and fauna.
On this 6-day Manu National Park Tour, you’ll have the opportunity to see magnificent and rare species including jaguars, giant otters, giant ceibas, toucans, monkeys, and more.
Hike alongside waterfalls in the high Andes mountains, take a night walk to see the nocturnal jungle come alive, get a good night’s sleep each evening at the park’s remote lodges scattered throughout the reserve, and wake up to a symphony of birds calling in the canopy overhead.
Day 1 — Travel to Manu National Park
Begin your journey to Manu National Park with an early morning hotel pick-up in Cusco. From there, you’ll take a private transport through traditional Quechua communities, snowy mountain peaks, and small Andean farmsteads toward Manu.
You’ll make a few stops to stretch our legs throughout the day, including with a visit to outstanding ancient pre-Inca burial towers, and Cusco’s folklore capital, Paucartambo.
In the forest, you’ll hope to experience the incredible daily mating display of Peru’s national bird: the Andean cock-of-the-rock. Each morning and afternoon, these birds gather in communal leks (meeting spots) to show-off and compete for love.
In the evening, you’ll arrive at the Pilcopata Lodge, where you’ll stay the night.
Day 2 — Canoe Alto Madre de Dios River, and Night Hike in the Jungle
Today, you’ll travel along the Alto Madre de Dios and Manu Rivers to Matshiguenka Lodge in Manu National Park. Upon entering the park, you’ll register at the ranger station before settling in at your lakeside lodge where you’ll spend the next two nights.
Throughout the course of the day, you’ll get out first look at the reserve’s outstanding biodiversity with lunch along the river, and an afternoon hike. In the dry season, the beaches are filled with nesting birds, and you may spot caiman alligators sunning on the shore. Keep a look out for red howler monkeys and other primates on the river.
Later in the day, visit lake Cocha Otorongo and climb a 66 foot (20 meter) observation tower for a bird’s-eye view of the river and a unique look at the thick jungle canopy. Be on the lookout for a large family of endangered giant river otters that inhabit the lake.
Enjoy dinner back at the lodge, and then venture back to the jungle to experience the transition from day to night. Hear the rich sounds of tree frogs and forest insects waking up, and feel goosebumps rise on your arms when you see the eerie eye-shine of large Black Caiman Alligators hunting in the dark water.
Day 3 — Wake Up with Monkeys and Macaws
Begin the day on the banks of the Manu River, where you’ll climb a 50 foot (15 meter) observation tower to watch monkeys enjoying a fruit breakfast in the branches. Marvel at the primitive Shansho bird and countless parrots squawking hellos to each other from the branches.
Return to camp for lunch, and enjoy the afternoon aboard a catamaran sailing around Salvador Oxbow Lake.
Day 4 — Float to Boca Manu and Visit an Indigenous Medicinal Garden
Early in the morning, hike the trails and listen to the vibrant chorus of birds waking up in the canopy overhead. As the sun rises, watch falcons and other birds of prey soar high in the sky, patiently searching for their next meal.
After lunch at the lodge, board the boats and head downstream towards Boca Manu. Float silently down river and explore this mighty and diverse environment without alerting your arrival. Upon arrival at Boca Manu, you’ll visit the indigenous Matshiguenka and Yine communities. Enjoy an afternoon sharing in activities and vising their medicinal botanical garden.
Day 5 — Set Sail for Atalaya Port or Explore Jaguar Lake
