  • Get to know the people and lifestyle of the region
  • Expert guides
  • Trip begins and ends in Cusco

This Machu Picchu tour is perfect for those who want to see Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley, and still get off the beaten path. You will have a local guide throughout your trip and will stay with a host family in Cusco, instead of one of the many overcrowded hostels or hotels. Your guide will show you the highlights of the Sacred Valley, then bring you to your host family’s village in a remote corner of the valley, where you can get to know the family, eat a home-cooked meal, and sleep in a comfortable, private room. The next day, you will visit the amazing Perollniyoc Waterfall, and nearby Incan ruins. You then continue on to Aguas Calientes and a full day at Machu Picchu.

Day 1

Pisac, Chichubamba, & Sonqo

In the morning of the Machu Picchu tour, you will depart for the Sacred Valley. On the way, you will stop in Awanacancha and see llamas, alpacas, guanacos, and some local artisans, who will teach you about spinning, dying, and weaving the traditional way. You then head to the town of Pisac, which has beautiful carved-stone ruins and panoramic views of the Sacred Valley. After, you will visit a local market to browse the selection and sample local foods, before a picnic lunch. After lunch, you will head to your host family’s village, where you have the choice of helping prepare a local dinner, or simply enjoying while chatting with the family! Overnight in a comfortable, private room at the host family’s house.
Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2

Perollniyoc to Aguas Calientes

You will breakfast early and then hike about two hours to the Perollniyoc Waterfall. Along the way, you will pass farmland, locals leading cows and sheep to pasture, traditional homes, and many other quaint pastoral landscapes. There will be a short rest at the base of Perollniyoc, and then you will climb to the Incan ruins above. After touring the ruins, you will make your way to Sonqo and Ollantaytambo. Time permitting, you will be able to do a quick tour of this pretty village and more ruins, before boarding a train to Aguas Calientes (the city that feeds Machu Picchu). The evening is open and you can walk around the town, visit its hot springs, or simply relax.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 3

Machu Picchu-Cusco

You will breakfast early and then take a short bus ride (about 20 minutes) to Machu Picchu. There, the guide will give you a 2.5 hour tour and then leave you some free time to explore on your own, or climb Huayna Picchu (the hill behind the ruins). (Note: There are also other sites, including the Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) and the Inca Bridge. Additional sites sometimes require additional park fees). After a late lunch, you will board a return train in Aguas Calientes for an evening arrival in Cusco.

Kyle Wiggins

Born in the beautiful province of Acomayo, right in the Andes Mountains, Domingo’s love of the great outdoors began at a young age. When he was just a kid, his family moved to Cusco, where he discovered his love for tourism. Domingo’s first job in tourism was as a porter on the Inca Trail. It was really hard work, but working with the guides inspired him to become one as well. He went to school to study tourism. He tells us that the day that he finally got his license as an official tour guide was one of the best days in his life. It was such an exciting moment to be able to lead people on the trail, and now 16 years later, he still gets excited every time he guides travelers on a tour. A few years ago, he decided to begin his own tour company. His hope was that through his tours, he could show travelers not only the beauty and history of the region but also teach them about the rich Andean culture.

Among Domingo’s hobbies, he loves photography and he is an amateur photographer. And he has the perfect job to learn and improve his photography skills everyday, he always brings his camera with him.

Urbano, a Local Tour Guide from Cusco

He was born in the Apurimac region of Peru in an indigenous community with rich agricultural land. As a kid, he learned from his parents how to work on the field and the importance of maintaining the indigenous culture’s age-old traditions. Although he left this small town at a very young age to attend elementary school in Cusco, he has carried this appreciation for ancient culture his whole life. Living in the magical city of Cusco, he was able to expand his knowledge of his ancestors even more and was inspired to take this knowledge and share it with others. After studying tourism in school, he became a tour guide, specializing in ancient cultures. Having been born in an indigenous village and as a native speaker of the Quechua language, teaching travelers from all over the world about the history and land has been a great honor and a dream come true.

Urbano is currently working on building a new home, and although he recognises that it’s been quite a hard work, he absolutely loves it! In his free time, he also love spending as much time as possible with his wife and two little kids!

Huber, a Local Tour Guide from Cusco

Huber also grew up in a small town in the Sacred Valley so he was raised to always respect and love Mother Nature. As a kid, he always admired the tour guides passing through his town. Not only did they get to explore some of the most beautiful parts of the country, but they got to meet people from all over the world. Huber became determined that he too would become a tour guide. As soon as he was old enough, he moved to Cusco to study tourism and become a certified Inca Trail guide. For about 14 years now, he has been leading tours, and discovered that, beyond taking his guests on the “typical” paths, he wanted to be a unique guide and take them to the unique interesting spots other guides weren’t going to. He also have studied medicinal plants and love teaching the travelers about the many fascinating benefits these plants can have.

Growing up, huber has always loved fishing, particularly for river trout. Now as an adult he has begun to rediscover this passion! And he also has recently discovered a new passion for birdwatching, and his goal to keep learning even more so he can lead his own birdwatching tours soon.

*Please note that this tour may be guided by another local guide, always providing a genuine approach to the local culture.
