This Tour Kuelap, Homestay & Cultural Experience has a little bit of everything. You’ll explore ancient, mysterious ruins amidst beautiful jungle and mountain scenery. Then you’ll visit a local community to learn more about daily life there. Later, you’ll spend a few nights with a local family in their countryside home. Finally, you’ll learn more about one of Peru’s most popular exports from a local organic coffee producer. You’ll also get to taste this delicious coffee! This tour will immerse you in the culture and give you a deep appreciation of Peruvian traditions.

Day 1: VISIT TO LOCAL COMMUNITY KNOWN FOR ITS POTTERY HANDCRAFTING
Your guide will be waiting for you and your bus around 7:30 am in Chachapoyas. Once we arrive, you’ll have time to freshen up int the hotel before we set out on our first adventure!
First, we will visit Huancas, an charming village close to Chachapoyas that is known for its pottery. In 2012, it was even declared part of the National Cultural Heritage. After meeting the local artists and trying out some pottery for ourselves, we will hike to the extraordinary Sonche River Canyon.

Day 2: KUELAP
On our way to tour Kuelap’s fortress, we will visit the Huiquilla Private Conservation Area, a pioneer in conservation efforts in the Amazonas region and home to astonishing biodiversity. Then, we will continue on to Kuelap, an impressive archaeological site with hundreds of constructions left by the Chachapoyan culture.
After you spend some time admiring this mysterious place surrounded by picturesque nature, we will head back to Chachapoyas. Your knowledgeable and friendly guides will make sure you tour Kuelap fully informed on the history and significance of the area.

Day 3: HIKE, HUAMANPATA LAGOON AND HOMESTAY
Today we will visit Ocol and Rodriguez de Mendoza before heading to Izuchaca. Here, we will depart on a 4 hour hike to the Laguna of Huamanpata. During the lagoon season (from February to July), we will have to canoe to our next homestay. However, during the dry season, we will arrive on foot in less than an hour.
During the homestay, we will be spoiled with tasty local food for lunch and dinner. After, we eat we will decide which of the many different excursions we want to do today: the orchid road, the observation road, the monkey road, or just a simple stroll through the lagoon with the chance of some trout fishing, depending on the season.

Day 4: HIKE AND THERMAL BATHS
We’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast with Roberto and his family as we take in the beautiful scenery one last time. After breakfast, we’ll hike to Rodriguez de Mendoza. In the afternoon, we will visit the medicinal-quality thermal baths of Tocuya.

Day 5: COFFEE TOUR
Mendoza is one of the best organic coffee and panela (unrefined sugar from sugar cane) producers in Peru that have made its gastronomy famous. On this tour, a coffee-producing family will explain the production process to us.
After a jam-packed morning of activities, we’ll break for lunch with the family. Later, we’ll go on an educational visit to the Agricultural Cooperative of Rodriguez de Mendoza’s coffee factory. At the end of the tour, we’ll have the chance to sample some of the delicious coffee.

Day 6: CHACHAPOYAS
You will have a free morning to explore the city, buy some souvenirs or simply relax for awhile. The buses to Lima or Chiclayo leave around 1:00 pm.

We cannot accept single travelers for the Tour Kuelap trip. All prices are based on double occupancy.
Accommodations: In Chachapoyas, you will stay 3 nights in a comfortable family-owned hotel. For two nights, you will stay with Roberto and his family in a homestay in Rodriguez de Mendoza.
We can help arrange transportation for you from Lima or Chiclayo to Chachapoyas. There are topnotch luxurious buses from Lima (about 22 hours) all the way to Chachapoyas. If you don’t want to stay on a bus for that long, there’s the option to fly to Chiclayo and take the bus to Chachapoyas from there (about 10 hours).
