Description

The ancient Inca city of Choquequirao is the sister city of Machu Picchu. It sits high on a mountain above the Rio Apurimac surrounded by the snow-capped Vilcabamba Moutnains. This Inca city’s spectacular location often leads to comparison with Machu Picchu. However, this secret jewel has no road access, few visitors, and a haunting ambiance unmatched by other Inca sites.

Itinerary

Day 1: International Arrival in Lima

We’ll set up your transportation from Lima International airport to your hotel upon arrival. Once at the hotel, we will provide you with more detailed information about the tour and its included service vouches.

Day 2: Lima Sightseeing Tour

You’ll have the morning to relax and rest up for the amazing trip ahead.

After lunch on your own, you’ll pick you up from the Hotel at 1:30 pm for a guided tour to the “City of Kings.” This excursion shows you the best of Lima through pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary times.

Day 3: Flight to Cusco / Cusco Sightseeing Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll head to the airport for your flight to Cusco. You’ll be warmly received upon arrival before taking the morning to relax.

You will be picked up from the hotel at 1:30 pm to tour the Koricancha Temple of Sun, a very important Inca shrine. Later, you’ll visit the impressive Cathedral in the main square. The tour continues in Sacsayhuaman on a hill that looms over the city. Then, you’ll visit Qenqo, a singular limestone outcrop used for religious purposes. Finally, the tour ends with a visit to Puca Pucara and Tambomachay.

Day 4: Moray & Maras Salt Flats Hike

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be picked up at 9:00 am and taken to the Sacred Valley. The day’s adventure starts on the fertile plain of Chinchero. Then you will walk through the little town of Maras.

Later, you’ll arrive at the circular Inca ruins of Moray. Here you’ll find “the Inca laboratory.” Next, you’ll head down into the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the famous salt flats where more than 5,000 terraces are still in production. Finally, you’ll meet up with provided transportation near Urubamba River for the drive back to Cusco.

Day 5: Cusco, Cachora / Chiquisca

You’ll be picked up bright and early from the hotel at 5:00 am in a private vehicle for the 4 hour trip to Cachora. While you are having breakfast, the crew will get the horses ready for the day’s 16 km (6 hour) trek. As you begin the trek, you’ll observe the majestic snow-capped peak of Padrayoc. From Capuliyoc’s lookout point, you may even have the chance to see condors.

As you descend into the Apurímac Canyon, the vegetation will change from Agave and cactus to dwarf tree forest. You’ll stop for lunch in Cocamasana before continuing on to the campsite in Chiquisqa.

Day 6: Chiquisca / Choquequirao Archeological Site

After an early morning breakfast, you’ll continue the descent to the Apurímac River in the impressive canyon of the same name. After a short rest, you’ll hike up to Choquequirao archaeological Site. The first couple of hours are on a steep incline. Starting in Santa Rosa, the path will alternate between flat and incline the rest of the way.

You’ll stop for lunch in Maranpata before continuing on to the campsite in the Inca city of Choquequirao. Here you will be graced with an unbelievable view of the canyon as well as a chance to see Andean Condors soaring in the mountains.

Day 7: Explore the Inca city of Choquequirao

After breakfast, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of Inca City of Choquequirao, or “Cradle of Gold” complex. You’ll visit both the high parts (Hanan) and the lower parts (Urin) as well as some areas that are still covered in wild foliage waiting to be restored into the way it was when the Incas owned it. The steep mountainside below the main plaza features several clusters of newly-discovered buildings, including the Waterfall Temple, an intriguing ceremonial complex facing the cascades of a ravine.

Day 8: Choquequirao / Maizal

You’ll head uphill for awhile after breakfast to the first pass in the Inca city of Choquequirao before descending to Rio Blanco for lunch. First, you’ll walk through the cloud forest on our way to the Pinchayunuyoc archaeological site.

Once you get to the Rio Blanco, you’ll have time to rest, swim and enjoy lunch. Then you’ll start the steep 3 hour climb up to Maizal village high over the river close to the sacred Apus of the Incas.

Day 9: Maizal / Yanama

After breakfast, you’ll head uphill towards the Victoria Pass, passing the impressive Victoria Inca mines along the way. The trail is surrounded by beauty from the cloud forest to the Andean Puna.

You’ll stop for lunch at the pass, overlooking a spectacular view of the Choquetakarpo mountain where you might see some condors soaring above us. Finally, you’ll descend to the town of Yanama where the group will spend the night.

Day 10: Yanama / Colpapampa

After breakfast, you’ll work our way up to the Yanama pass. Here, you will have an incredible view of the snow-capped Mt. Sacsarayoj and Mt. Padreyoc.

From Yanama, you’ll continue up through the valley towards the highest point of the tour crossing small bridges along the way to the community of Totora where you will have lunch. Later, you’ll head to our campsite for the night: the beautiful Colpapampa with natural hot springs.

Day 11: Colpapampa / Lucmabamba

After breakfast, today’s hike begins with an easy walk along the Santa Teresa River past abundant vegetation and passion fruit, and coffee plantations.

You’ll pass the Coripacchi waterfalls and the Wiñaypoko settlement on our way to La Playa for lunch. After lunch, you’ll continue on to Lucmabamba, the evening’s campsite.

Day 12: Lucmabamba / LLaqtapata / Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, you’ll head out on a 3 hour climb up to El Mirador or Abra Q’elloqasa where you’ll be greeted with a stunning view of Machu Picchu. Then you’ll continue on to Llaqtapata archaeological site for more stunning views of Machu Picchu as well as the Salkantay Mountain.

Once you have rested for a bit, you will embark on a 2 hour descent towards a hydroelectric plant on the Aobamba River that will take you through rich bamboo forests, beautiful orchards and picturesque coffee plantations.

At the end of the day, you’ll take a train to Aguas Calientes where you’ll spend the night at Aguas Calientes Hotel.

Day 13: Machu Picchu / Back to Cusco
You’ll have breakfast at the hotel before a full day excursion to Machu Picchu where you will embark on a guided tour that features all the main attractions. You’ll visit the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, and the Temple of the Three Windows as well as houses, warehouses, and a large central square connected by narrow roads and steps and surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, you’ll have time to explore at your own pace.

Additionally, you’ll have the chance to take an hour walk up to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or climb to the top of Wayna Picchu which offers an incredible view of the whole sanctuary. You’ll head back to Cusco by train in the afternoon.

Day 14: Free day in Cusco

You’ll have breakfast at the hotel and then enjoy a free day in Cusco on your own.

Day 15: Depart Cusco / Lima International Departure

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be taken to the airport to catch your flight back to Lima on your way home.
