This Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is close to Cusco and takes you through beautiful countryside, full of snow-capped mountains and plenty of wild llamas and alpacas.
As you hike, you will get to know the living descendants of the Incas. These locals have kept the traditions of their ancestors, living in typical stone houses with thatched roofs and speaking quechua, the same language the Incas spoke in Machu Picchu 500 years ago. You will get the chance to visit a local’s house and learn more about how they live and cook, their typical foods, and their beliefs.

Day 1 – Hike to Isaqccocha Pass, Visit Patacancha, and Take the Train to Ollantaytambo
We will pick you up at 5:00 am at your hotel, then go on a 3.5-hour drive to Huaccawasi. As soon as you get there, you will have breakfast and start your hike. Your Lares Trek to Machu Picchu starts with a 3-hour gentle uphill, rising from an elevation of 11,811 feet (3,600 meters) to 13,780 feet (4,200 meters) to Isaqccocha Pass. Here, you will enjoy rewarding views. Then, you will descend for another 3 hours to an Inca village named Patacancha, elevation 11,483 feet (3,500 meters).
From there, you will take a 30-minute car ride down to the Ollantaytambo. You will have a packed lunch on the way and dinner in Ollantaytambo. Finally, you will take the 19:00 pm train for an hour and 45 minutes to Aguas Calientes, arriving about 21:00 pm. You will stay the night in a hostel. The total hiking for today is 6 hours, 8 miles (12 kilometers).
Day 2 – Explore the Ancient Ruins of Machu Picchu
Today, you will wake up at 4:30 am, have breakfast in the hostel at 5:00 am, then go to the bus terminal with your private tour guide. After a 30-minute bus ride, you will arrive to Machu Picchu. First, you will go to an amazing lookout point. Then, you will have a private tour for two and a half hours. Afterward, you will have free time to explore. One option for your free time is hiking to the Sun Gate, a 2 hour round trip.
