The Ishinca Valley, located in Peru, is a popular destination for mountain climbers, boosting fascinating views of various mountains in the region, including Ishinca, Urus, Tocllaraju, Ranrapalco, the Palcarajus and many more. Join us for a 6 days 5 nights challenging hike, where we will bring you to first climb Urus Mountain, 5495 meters (18028 feet) above sea level and then the more difficult Ishinca Mountain, 5530 meters (18143 feet) above sea level.
For travelers with little or no climbing experience, it is essential that you start with the climb up Urus Mountain first, as it is considered an easier mountain and a good choice to acclimatize to the subsequent hike up Ishinca Mountain, which is also climbed from the same valley. Through this tour, you will climb through the ravines on the way to Llaca, where you will get to see amazing views of mountains such as Huascaran, Hualcan, Ranrapalca, and Chopicalqui. Day 1: Huaraz – Ishinca Valley – Tocllaraju Base Camp
On the first day of the tour, you will be driven for 2 hours from Huaraz to the village of Pashpa, where you will then hike up to Ishinca Valley. This is a gently rising path with low difficulty, starting on a plateau with views of Huascaran National Park and then passing through a beautiful quenual forest. After this 5-hour hike, you will arrive at Tocllaraju Base Camp, 4390 meters (14402 feet) above sea level. This is where you will set up camp for the night, staying in a tent.
Day 2: Tocllaraju Base Camp – Laguna Akilpo – Tocllaraju Base Camp
The second day will see you embarking on an acclimatization hike to the beautiful Laguna Akilpo, 4200 meters (13780 feet) above sea level. After this 4 to 5-hour hike, you will then return to Tocllaraju Base Camp to spend the night.
Day 3: Tocllaraju Base Camp – Summit of Urus Mountain – Tocllaraju Base Camp
On the third day, you will climb the East face of Urus Mountain starting at 04:00 am. You will first make a steep climb directly up a ridge and across large moraine rocks, for about 3.5 hours, until you reach the ice, then climb on a steadier gradient on the ice for another 1 hour, before embarking on an easier half-hour climb towards the summit. You will arrive in time to see the sun rise on Tocllaraju, Akilpo, Palcaraju and Ishinca, before taking a 3-hour steep and long descent back to Tocllaraju Base Camp by the same route.
Day 4: Tocllaraju Base Camp
The fourth day is designated as a rest day at Tocllaraju Base Camp.
Day 5: Tocllaraju Base Camp – Summit of Ishinca Mountain – Tocllaraju Base Camp
On day 5, you will embark on the ascent up Ishinca Mountain, starting at 03:00 am with a steady climb towards Lake Ishinca. Then, you will continue hiking over more demanding, steep moraine rocks until you reach the glacier, where you will put on your crampons and secure your ropes for the next phase of the climb. Which route you climb will be decided by the guide according to the weather, experience and fitness of the group, and it will take about 3 to 4 hours to reach the summit. Afterwhich, another 3 to 4 hours to return back to Tocllaraju Base Camp.
Day 6: Tocllaraju Base Camp – Ishinca Valley – Huaraz
On the last day of the tour, you will take a 4-hour hike back to Ishinca Valley, then to the village of Pashpa and subsequently return to Huaraz in a private vehicle being driven for 2 hours.
