Itinerary

Day 1 – Drive to Cachora, Marvel at Apurimac Canyon, and Hike Downhill to the Campsite
Your Choquequirao Trekking Tour starts at 6:00 am as you leave Ollantaytambo and go on a 5-hour drive in a van to Cachora. When you get there, you will stop to stretch your legs and buy snacks for the trail. Then, you will get back in the car and drive to the starting point of the trek. Your horses will be waiting for you at the trail head.

Before starting to hike, you will have a tasty lunch while admiring Apurimac Canyon from a lookout point. Next, you will walk for 4 hours downhill to the first campsite at Chiquisca (6,240 feet/1,900 meters). This campsite is on a ridge above the river. From there, you can see incredible views of the glacier above you and the canyon below you.

Day 2 – Challenge Yourself on an Uphill Hike and Exit the Canyon to Reach Choquequirao’s Base
The second day of your Choquequirao Trekking Tour begins nice and early at 5:00 am. You will get up early to make as much progress on the trail as you can before the sun comes up. First, you will descend for 30 minutes to 1 hour to reach the river. Then, you will hike 4-6 hours on a steep uphill with very little shade.

Above half-way up the ascent, you will take a break at Santa Rosa (6,730 feet/2,050 meters) to enjoy a snack and fill up your water bottle. Then, you will hike out of the canyon to Marampata (9,470 feet/2,860 meters), the lunch spot. After lunch, you will walk for 1-2 more hours to the campsite at the base of Choquequirao, at an elevation of (9,385 feet/2,860 meters).

Day 3 – Explore the Choquequirao Ruins and Learn about their Interesting History
Today, you will get to see the Choquequirao ruins! Each part of the ruins is 40 minutes from the other ones, so you will be doing a good amount of walking today. Hear about the fascinating history of the citadel and learn about the culture of the ancient civilization. At about 15:00 pm, you will return to Marampata to camp and rest for the night.

Day 4 – Enjoy a Delicious Brunch and Walk Down to the Apurimac River
After a lovely brunch admiring the canyon, you will start to walk at about 12:00 pm downhill to the Apurimac River. In Santa Rosa, you will stop to enjoy a snack. Then, you will continue on the route to the river and begin to walk uphill on the way to Chiquisca. The afternoon winds of the canyon will refresh you as you go.

Day 5 – Hike to the Canyon Rim and Return by Car
The final day of your tour starts early as it is best to make progress before the sun rises. After a filling breakfast, you will go uphill to the canyon edge. Up there, you will eat a lovely lunch at a lookout point, seeing the route from the past couple days from above. Then, you will take a short walk to the car. Finally, you will be dropped off at your hotel.
