Discover an Ancient Inca City on this Choquequirao Cusco Trek

This Choquequirao Cusco Trek takes you from Cusco through the Andes mountains to an Inca archaeological site, showing you amazing views of mountain canyons along the way. Your experienced local tour guide will show you the way on your private tour as you hike past avocado trees and cacti and cross the Apurimac River.

Choquequirao is located at the beginning of the Amazon jungle (altitude 9,842 feet/3,000 meters) and is one of the most remote Inca fortresses in the region around Cusco. There, you will be able to see the ruins of urban and agricultural sectors. You can also look forward to learning about an astronomical site dedicated to the llama constellation and the sacred houses of Inca mummies.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Enjoy the Gorgeous Mountain Canyons near Cachora and Capulilloc
Your Choquequirao Cusco tour starts as you are picked up at 5:00 am and taken by private car through nice farming valleys to the villages of Cachora and Capulilloc, where you will have a snack and enjoy the large mountain canyons. Then, hike downhill for 3 hours to Chiquisca (altitude 6,233 feet/1,900 meters). After time to rest and have lunch, you will walk 30 minutes downhill and cross a bridge over the Apurimac River. Finally, hike uphill for 3 hours to the campsite: Santa Rosa Baja (6,528 feet/1,990 meters). There, you will enjoy a filling dinner before going to sleep for the night. The total hiking for the day comes to 7 hours, 8.7 miles (14 kilometers).

Day 2 – Explore the Incredible Inca Site of Choquequirao
After an early breakfast, you will hike uphill for 2.5 hours to the small village of Marampata. The sky views here are the best! Then, you will take a moderate 1-hour hike to the amazing Inca site of Choquequirao. You will have a couple hours to explore the site and enjoy a packed lunch before returning to Marampata for afternoon tea and dinner. The total hiking for the day is 5 hours, 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

Day 3 – Hike to Playa Rosalina and Chiquisca
Today starts with a 4-hour hike down a familiar road to Playa Rosalina (4,845 feet/1,477 meters), where you will have lunch. Then, hike uphill for an hour and 40 minutes to Chiquisca (6,233 feet/1,900 meters). This is the campsite for the day and you will enjoy a lovely dinner here. The total hiking for today is 7 hours, 8.7 miles (14 kilometers).

Day 4 – Visit Capuliyoc and Return to Cusco
After breakfast, you will hike uphill for 4 hours (5.6 miles/9 kilometers) to Capuliyoc. Then you will have lunch, say goodbye to the horse team workers, and head back to Cusco through Cachora on a 3.5-hour car ride. Once you arrive to Cusco, your Choquequirao Cusco trek will come to an end as you part ways with your chef and tour guide and are dropped off at your hotel.

Important notes

  • You can rent the following equipment from the tour operator for an additional cost: down sleeping bag (US $20 for 3 nights) and backpack (US $20).
