Hiking Baru Volcano in Panama

Take the challenge of hiking Baru Volcano — hike up Panama’s highest peak (3,475 meters/11,400 feet)! In about 4-7 hours, depending on one’s physical condition, you’ll make your way to the dormant volcano’s summit, as you traverse through rolling green hills, lush jungle, and finally to rocky cliffs. From Volcan Baru’s summit, you will get a stunning panoramic of both of Panama’s coastlines, the Pacific and the Carribean. (Note that visibility of both coastlines depends on weather)

If you choose to hike the volcano during the dry season starting at about midnight, you will reach the summit in time for the amazing pink sunrise breaking through the clouds. During the rainy season, starting at about 6 am, you should reach the summit between 10 am and 12 pm, with time to enjoy the expansive view of mountains, jungles, and oceans.

•  4 liters of drinking water (at least)
•  Food, snacks, energy bars, etc.
•  Shoes in good condition for hiking
•  Camera
•  Rain coat or waterproof jacket
•  Passport or passport copy for foreigners or cedula for Panamanians

Fitness:

Participants should be in good physical condition. Although you can take your time hiking Baru Volcano’s trail, certain sections of the trail are quite strenuous and the hike spans anywhere from 8 to 14 hours, depending on physical condition.
