Your first stop on this trip is the famous lake of Xochimilco. The Xochimilco Island of the Dolls has attracted thousands of travelers.
Legend has it that the caretaker of the island was unable to save a girl from drowning and hung up her toy doll in a tree to protect her spirit after she died. Some time later, her ghost returned to haunt him, and he continued hanging dolls up in the trees out of respect. Finally, it is said he realized that the dolls themselves seemed to be inhabited by the spirits of the dead. He continued hanging dolls up on the island for over 50 years. One day, the caretaker himself drowned and supposedly joined the other spirits of the island.
