On this San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan Tour, discover two indigenous communities and learn about their traditions and culture. As you visit the churches of the two towns, you’ll hear about how Mayan culture has influenced the myths, religion, and beliefs of the region. First, you will enjoy a guided tour of the San Juan Chamula Church and Market, learning about regional customs. Then, you’ll get to go inside the Churches of San Juan Bautista. Admire the altar arrangements and see how saints are dressed according to indigenous traditions. After that, you will have time to walk around and buy regional handicrafts and souvenirs.
Later on, you will go to the Zinacantán Community. This place is famous for its waist loom, which you will get to see. There, you will join a local family to eat a traditional light lunch of frijolitos (beans), organic coffee, handmade tortillas, and a typical regional drink.
Next, witness the religious merging of the Catholic Church and Mayan customs in the Church of San Lorenzo. Finally, you will visit the Samuel Taktik Museum in San Cristobal.
