Every year from November to March, this natural reserve is home to millions of of monarch butterflies that have traveled south from Canada for their yearly winter migration. Indeed, they’re attracted by the climate and the leafy Oyameles (endemic pines of the Mexican highlands) where the Monarch butterfly stays in winter for its reproduction and survival. This sanctuary is easily accessible and full of abundant vegetation. At the visitor center, you can rent horses or explore the sanctuary on foot.
After observing the butterflies and enjoying the park’s pristine nature, you will depart for the magical town of Meson Viejo on the slopes of a nearby volcano. For lunch, you will enjoy a delicious local meal in a small lodge.
After lunch, you’ll head to Toluca Volcano National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to walk along the volcano’s ancient crater, and explore Moon and Sun Lagoons. In the winter months, the volcano is often covered with a light blanket of snow that accentuates the outstanding slopes of the landscape.
