Embark on a Maya tour by spending half a day with direct descendants of the Mayas, who have inherited and upheld the traditions and values of their ancestors. On this immersive experience, community elders will serve as your guides. Begin your Mayan adventure with a traditional medicine workshop and tour of the community herb garden. Your guide, a community elder, will introduce you to the healing properties of different herbs, as well as the history of herbal medicine in Mayan culture.
Next, learn the artisinal skill of extracting Henequen fiber from Agave. This important fiber, known as “green gold” is used to make Henequen yarn. An elder will teach you the process and invite you to participate.
Later in the day, meet with a Mayan elder who will introduce you Mayan history and lore. Learn Mayan battle strategies such as the “trap and ambush” technique, passed down through generations. Besides that, you will also have the opportunity to hear your guide’s life story – who lived through the 1910 Mexican Revolution – from his very ears. Learn about his personal history, and discover the surprising role of the Mayas in the Mexican Revolution.
Cap off this Mayan adventure by learning about Melipone bees. This important species is referenced in Mayan temples and ancient codices. Learn about the bees’ role in rituals, medicine, artisanal work and basic day-to-day life.
