About the Sites

Izamal is known as the “City of Many Cultures” for its outstanding representations of Mayan, colonial, and distinctly modern influence. The small, stunning city is set alongside rolling hills, filled with pre-Hispanic pyramids and temples and is home to one of the largest monasteries in Latin America.

Chichen Itza, meaning “the mouth of the well of the water shamans” was a ceremonial city, and is home the Kikulkán Alsown “The Castle” pyramid, the Temple of the Warriors, the ceremonial ball court, the convent, and the astronomical observatory. Each year on the spring and fall equinoxes, the sun and shadows form a slithering snake along the side of The Castle’s imposing stairway.

Chichen Itza flourished as an important city for nearly a millennia. Its ceremonial sites, art, and architecture contain a blend of nearly 1,000 years of history and are important indicators of the Mayan Toltec civilization that once dominated Mexico’s landscape.

Ik-Kil Cenote is arguably the most stunning cenote in Mexico. Out of a fairy-tale or Indiana Jones, the underground water reservoir sinks 85 feet below the surrounding earth, vines hang from the above, and vibrant parrots and other bird life live and thrive in the cave-like walls. The cenote stretches 225 feet (60 meters) across and 130 feet (40 meters) deep.

To the Maya, the mystic waters of Ik-Kil were considered sacred, and sacrifices were conducted here in petition to the rain god. Bones, jewelry, and artifacts have been found sunk in the deep, clear waters below.
