An amazing day tour to the Calakmul ruins, starting and ending in Bacalar! Plus a jungle hike, and a visit to a bat cave!
Journey through ancient history and roads of the Mayan city of Calakmul, a primary capital of the Mayan empire, and one of the largest archeological discoveries of the 20th Century. You’ll encounter exuberant wildlife among the surrounding jungle, including monkeys, toucans, ocellated turkeys, deer and possibly jaguars and pumas.
We’ll drive approximately one and a half hours before entering the Biosphere Reserve, where the ancient Mayan capital of Calakmul is located.
Along the way, we’ll stop at the Natural History and Archeology Museum where an expert guide will introduce the region’s nature and archeology. Once in the archeological site, we will walk through the paths for approximately four hours while telling you all about the meanings and uses of the buildings, as well as the history of this significant Mayan city from the Classic period.
If you’re up for a full day of immersion in a unique natural environment, this is the experience for you.
Bat Cave: Observe millions of bats flying out to feed at dusk. The flapping sounds of these mammals is hypnotic and makes for a truly unique experience. The tour will arrive at the bat cave at sunset, when the bats come out.
Balam Kú: Experience the stucco friezes of the Classic period, located inside one of the few buildings still open to the public.
Brief Hike Through the Jungle: You’ll get up close and personal with the nature of the area, while remembering to respect your surroundings.
