3-5 hoyrs Kayak tour based on the knowledge of local fisherman on boat navigation and the lagoon environment, visiting mangroves and an isolated beach. By taking this tour you will help the local community providing an alternative source of income for their struggling economy dependent on fishing in the nearby lagoon.
Kayak Limon is a community based, ecotourism project that aims to promote conservation and environmental education through a kayak tour, while providing an alternative source of income for a struggling local economy overly dependent on fishing in the nearby lagoon. The tour builds upon the knowledge of local fisherman on boat navigation and the lagoon environment, visiting mangroves and an isolated beach, lasting 3-5 hours depending on ability and time spent enjoying the beach.
The tour begins in Los Guineos, a small, rural fishing community next to Laguna Limón. Los Guineos is 28 km east of the town of Miches, in the Province of El Seibo, Dominican Republic. Los Guineos can be easily reached by the newly-constructed highway that connects Miches to Higuey/Punta Cana and passes through Los Guineos.
We recognize that our tour may not be for everyone as it is an active tour. During the 3-5 hours of the tour our guests can expect to paddle in kayak a total of around 8 km, although there are many stops along the way for rest and for our guides to share their information about the lagoon, the geography, the flora and fauna, and birds that make the tour an unique experience in nature. While it is an active tour, anybody of a modest level of fitness should be able to do the tour without any problems. We have given tours to young kids as well as older adults, each thoroughly enjoying the tour and not finding the physical demands overly strenuous.
Our tour is ideal for active families, adventure seekers, independent travelers, nature lovers, and anyone who want to gain a real sense of the Dominican Republic away from the tourists and the resorts. Our guests are immersed in the life of a fisherman in rural Dominican community, and have a cultural experience they will never forget.
We recommend our guests arrive in Los Guineos as early as possible. The earlier we embark upon our adventure, the more birds we will see (best times of the day are around 8-9 and 6-7), the calmer the lagoon, and they less strong the sun. Getting to Los Guineos early allows more time to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal from one of two cooks who are part of the Kayak Limon project.
Given circumstance out of our control (ie weather or other considerations), we recommend booking your tour at least 3 days in advance. Although if you time in the DR is limited and you want to ensure your ability to join us for a tour, we will take reservations as far in advance as you would like. However, if you do book a tour in advance please verify in the week before.
After you book your experience, you will receive a confirmation email from us confirming that your payment went through. You will then be connected directly to the tour operator, in case you have any further questions. We are also happy to answer any questions about the tour, or travel in general in your country of destination.
