Duration: 4 Days
Start/End Location: Hotel pick-up/drop-off in Santa Marta
Language Availability: English & Spanish
Day 1: Begin Trekking in the Sierra Nevadas
Begin your Sierra Nevada trek with 8:30 am hotel pick-up and transfer 3 hours to the small town of El Mamey. Here, stop for a hearty lunch at a small local restaurant before setting out to the trailhead for your first day of trekking.
Hike 4-hours through breathtaking countryside to reach your campsite. Upon arrival, settle in while your camp cook prepares dinner. Enjoy the evening to rest and reboot for tomorrow.
Day 2: Reach the Indigenous Village of Mutanzi
After breakfast, set out at 6:00 am for the indigenous village of Mutanzi. Here, you’ll have an opportunity to rest, explore, and admire the spectacular scenery. From Mutanzi, you’ll walk another 1 hour to a campsite for lunch. Rest up here, then set out for a 4-hour trek to your next campsite. Enjoy dinner and starlit skies before retiring to your bed/hammock for the night.
Day 3: Explore the Lost City of the Ancient Tayrona
Today, you’ll wake up early for a quick breakfast, then leave camp around 6:00 am for a 1-hour hike to Ciudad Perdida — the Lost City of the Tayrona.
Enter the city by climbing 1,200 stone stairs, and explore the spectacular ancient city hidden amid dense jungle. Your guide will give you a tour of the city, and you’ll have time to explore on your own. At about mid-day return to your campsite to relax and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, set out for the 4-hour trek back to yesterday’s lunch site where you’ll enjoy dinner and stay the night.
Day 4: Trek to El Mamey and Return to Santa Marta
After a hearty breakfast, pack up camp and set out for your last, long day of trekking. Today, you’ll hike almost 7-hours, mostly downhill, to the small town of El Mamey. From there, a car will be waiting to take you back to Santa Marta. You should arrive by early evening.
