On this 2-day adventure to Rainbow River in Colombia, we’ll take care of all the details so you can experience this incredible river with a local guide. You’ll travel from Villavicencio to the small town of La Macarena. From there, a guide will lead you along paths lined with waterfalls and spectacular rock formations to the exotic Rainbow River.

Not yet well known by travelers, Rainbow River is located in a remote area of Colombia in the beautiful Sierra de La Macarena National Park. The river’s five colors are only viewable between July and December and are incredibly impressive.

The region is a unique ecological destination — with many kinds of animals and plants that can only be found in this area. Each section of Rainbow River has its own different charms, colors, and surrounding wildlife. A local guide will lead you on an adventure of a lifetime to explore towering waterfalls, scenic swimming holes, and vibrant streams in this natural paradise.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Journey to Rainbow River

  • Take an early morning flight from Villavicencio to La Macarena
  • Check in to the hotel and drop off your baggage before heading out
  • Journey to the National Park with your local guide
  • Embark on a boat ride down the Guayabero River
  • Observe and learn about the animals that call this place home
  • Hike on one of the many trails inside the National Park
  • Discover the history and ecology surrounding the Rainbow River
  • The main event — experience the incredible Rainbow River
  • After lunch, head back to La Macarena and enjoy the sights of this charming, traditional Colombian village

Day 2 : Trek along the Rainbow River

  • In the morning, spot monkeys and colorful birds on a 20-minute boat ride to Rainbow River
  • Explore side streams with stunning waterfalls and natural swimming pools. You will have the opportunity to swim in these, if you choose.
  • Return to La Macarena for lunch
  • In the late afternoon, take your flight back to Villavicencio

Additional Notes

Try not to schedule your trip over a holiday, as access to the national park will be limited.

Remember you will be in a place where clothing and footwear will be constantly wet, so it needs to be lightweight and fast to dry. If you plan to swim in Rainbow River, keep in mind that you won’t be allowed to use any body lotions, sunscreen, insect repellent, or soap.

La Macarena is a small, traditional town with no luxury hotel infrastructure. All the hotels are comfortable but basic. They have a private bathroom, however, they do not have hot water.
