Duration: 8 hours (8:00 am-16:00 pm)
Start and end location: Santiago
After being picked up at your hotel, you will head deep into the Andes Mountains, to the village of Los Andes. Along the way, you will visit the Monument to the Battle of Chacabuco, in Chile’s War of Independence. As you drive, admire amazing mountain scenery and occasional Inca ruins, where llama caravans rested after a long journey on the Inca Trail. You can also see the ruins of the Transandino Railway.
Next, you will visit the San Esteban Vineyard, on the eastern end of the Aconcagua Valley. The vineyard takes full advantage of its mountainous, hillside location, with rocky soil and solar exposure. The results are grapes rich in structure and character. Learn all about the wine process on a tour, then taste their best wines.
Then, you will take a windy road called “El Caracol” (The Snail), altitude 8,800 feet (2,682 m), through the Aconcagua Valley, deeper into the heart of the Andes. Your expert driver will take you along the sharp bends and curves, approaching the border with Argentina. Finally, you will arrive to Portillo “Laguna del Inca” (Portillo Inca Lagoon). Your guide will tell you all about the lagoon’s myths and history.
On the shores of the lagoon, you’ll find the oldest ski resort in South America: Portillo. The resort is open in the winter (June-September), and you can enjoy lunch (not included) along with fantastic views of the sparkling lagoon and impressive mountain peaks. In the summer (October-May), you will enjoy a tasty, traditional Chilean lunch (not included) at a rustic countryside restaurant.
