Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
Start location: San Pedro de Atacama
End location: Uyuni
Day 1 – Cross the Border to Bolivia and Admire the Scenery of Three Lagoons
To start off your Uyuni Private Tour, you will leave your San Pedro de Atacama hotel at 7:00 am to drive to the Bolivian border at Hito Cajones. There, you will cross from Chile to Bolivia. At the border, you will get out of your minibus and get in a 4W vehicle. You will be amazed right off the bat when you enter Bolivia, as the dramatic landscape showcases the Licancabur Volcano. You can see this volcano in the distance as you approach from San Pedro.
Next, you will visit Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde), known for its bright turquoise waters because of its copper. Close by is White Lagoon (Laguna Blanca). Both of the lagoons are attractions of the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve.
As you go through the Salvador Dali Desert, stop by the Polques hot springs to relax in the warm water. After that, watch water at temperatures of 194°F (90°C) erupt from the ground at the Geysers of the Morning Sun (Géiseres del Sol de Mañana).
If you thought the lagoons earlier in the day were impressive, get ready to be amazed by the 30,000 flamingos that live at the Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada). This is a principal nesting ground home to three species of flamingos. The birds get their pink-red color as the lagoon’s algae reacts with sunlight. You will stay for the night at Hostal Villa Mar.
Day 2 – Admire Impressive Rock Formations and Canyon Wildlife
On this Uyuni Private Tour’s second day, you will see how volcanic lava formed the Lost City of Italy (Ciudad de Italia Perdida), along with other rock formations called the World Cup and Camel. After that, you will see Vinto Lagoon, Catal Lagoon/Black Lagoon, and Inca Canyon. Sora Canyon is home to a huge variety of animals such as llamas, ñanduz, vizcachas, vicuñas, and foxes. You’ll also stop by some Andean villages such as San Agustin and the Julaca train station before resting for the night at Hotel Piedra.
Day 3 – Explore the Huge Uyuni Salt Flats and Appreciate Unbeatable Views
Your Uyuni Private Tour is already coming to an end. But not before seeing the salt flats! Today, you will first see the Zepita Galaxies that formed 40,000 years ago in the stalactites of sub-aquatic bacteria in Lake Minchín. Then, you will drive through the Uyuni Salt Flats to Incahuasi Island, admiring the natural scenery of the Cactus Valley (Echinospis). Walk up to the highest point of the island for incredible 360-degree views. You will visit the following attractions in the afternoon: Ojos del Salar (Salt Flat Eyes), the Salt Mines, the Salt Museum, and the town of Colchani. At 16:00 pm, the tour ends.
