Chile Solar Eclipse, Altiplano, and Salar de Uyuni Tour 14 Day/ 13 Night

Experience the incredible and rare solar eclipse 2019 in beautiful Chile. On this all-included 14 day trip you’ll explore the best of Chile and Bolivia. From one of the most impressive deserts, to the coastal town of La Serena, you’ll get to meet locals and taste the unique flavors of these countries while experiencing Chiean culture in-depth.

The trip will end with the main event – Chile solar eclipse! Thousands will gather to watch this spectacular event and experience the magically moment of darkness in the day.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arica 
Our adventure will begin with your arrival in Arica! After settling into the hotel, there will be a short hike to the Morro de Arica for a brilliant view and provided snacks. Next, a leisurely tour of the city center will be conducted to round out the day.

Day 2: Museum Visit and Local Cuisine
After breakfast we will visit the San Miguel Archeological Museum in Azapa. The museum examines over 10,000 years of human development while exploring everything from land and sea to magic and beliefs. We will then drive for nearly 2 1/2 hours to the town of Putre. Here we will have time for a light stroll and a snack in the evening and then dinner in a restaurant on the market square, where you can indulge yourself with a meal of alpaca meat and quinoa.

Day 3: Tour Suriplaza and Dine in Parinacota
The day will kick off with breakfast before we take on a quiet hike to tour Suriplaza (4.750 mts). The area is framed by four volcanos and is known for its remote, otherworldly beauty that guidebooks often miss. There will be an option for those who feel fit to climb to the summit (5.300 mts) and snacks for the entire group. Following the tour of Suriplaza there will be a delicious dinner awaiting the group in the small village of Parinacota.

Day 4: Surire – National Park Las Vicuñas – Colchane
Today we start with breakfast before heading to the Surire salt flat in the south of Las Vicuñas National Park. Our next stop will take us to the Polloquere Hot Springs, which create a lagoon that offers a jaw-dropping view of the Surire salt flats. We will then have the opportunity to experience the broad, stratovolcano Volcano Isluga in Colchane. There will be dinner and our accommodations in Colchane after a busy day of adventure!

Day 5: Gigante de Tarapaca
After kicking off the morning with breakfast, we will continue our journey with a visit to Gigante de Tarapacá. This geoglyph is believed to depict the personality of Tunupa Tarapacá, an ancient deity, that traveled from Lake Titicaca to the Pacific Ocean on an epic journey.

Gigante de Tarapacá was used as an early astronomical calendar and is the largest human representation in the world. After our giant geoglyph experience and a snack, we will travel until we reach the Humberstone and Santa Laura mining camps. The once flourishing, yet now abandoned, mining towns reflect the splendor and contrast experienced by Chile in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After experiencing the eerie Santa Laura and Humberstone we will travel to the small oasis town of Pica, where we will eat dinner and stay overnight.

Day 6: Salar de Huasco and Ollague
We will journey to Salar de Huasco after breakfast and take on an easy hike (4.200mts) around the salt lake. After we hike in the National Park we will drive to Ollague, located in the Alto Loa National Park. In Ollague we will find a lunch and dinner of delicious local cuisine and our accommodations for the night.

Day 7: Journey to Bolivia
From Ollague we start our trip to Bolivia after breakfast. During our drive we will cross the border, change vehicles, and start towards Salar de Uyuni. On the way we discover the Salar de Ascotan, the Mirador de Volcanes Hermosos, and lunch. Meanwhile, we also see a Bolivian salt water lagoon at Laguna Honda, the flamingo frequenting lake at Cañapa, and the salar de Chiguana salt deposit. We end our day’s journey with dinner and a night’s sleep in Chuvic.

Day 8: Sunrise and Beautiful Views
Today we wake up bright and early to see the sun rise over Salar de Uyuni. After the stunning sunrise, we will visit the the island of Incahuasi to enjoy a delicious breakfast with hot Maté tea while overlooking the huge cacti of the island.

Next, we head towards Villa Mar, a small village in the Andes, and lunch as we continue our drive towards San Pedro de Atacama. Along the way we will visit the otherworldly rock formations at Cañon de la Anaconda and the llama breeding area at Laguna Negra. Later in the evening the excellent cook at our hostel will prepare our dinner as we settle for the night.

Day 9: San Pedro de Atacama
We have another early morning in store as we aim to be at the Chilean border around 9:00 am. Afterwards, we will finish the drive to the renowned San Pedro de Atacama at about 1 pm. In the afternoon we will have lunch and tour Valle de la Luna, where we will experience a stunning desert sunset in the Moon Valley and kick off our San Pedro experience.

Day 10: Hike Cerro Toco
Today we hike the ancient Cerro Toco volcano after a hearty breakfast. The sleeping volcano is one of the easiest climbs in the area and is known for its impressive views of the surrounding volcanos. We will have snacks along the way as we continue to savor the San Pedro atmosphere.

Day 11: Lagunas Esconcidas and Valle de Arcoiris
After breakfast, we will visit the stunning saltwater lagoons of Lagunas Esconcidas. There are 7 of the vibrant, turquoise lagoons surrounded by an incredible panorama of the San Pedro desert. Later we will travel to Valle de Arcoiris, or Rainbow Valley, to experience the extensive array of natural tones that give the valley its name. We’ll have dinner at Restaurante Baltinache in San Pedro, known for bringing innovation and gastronomic fusion to Atacameño cuisine.

Day 12: Driving Day
We have a long drive ahead of us as we head to Bahia Inglesa after breakfast. Along the way we will stop at the famous hand of the desert and the port city of Antofagasta while enjoying a snack. The white sanded beaches will greet us as we arrive and the coastal sunset after dinner will complete our first night on the beach.

Day 13: Chile Solar Eclipse
After a lovely breakfast we will travel south to a cozy town near La Serena to prepare for our celestial experience. Here we will wait for the Chile solar eclipse and enjoy our camping spot on the beach near the chungungo. We will experience the breathtaking cosmic event at 16:00, while devouring our dinner from the tremendous BBQ on the beach.

Day 14: Return to Santiago
This morning we will eat our final breakfast before driving to Santiago (4 hours). After arrival there will be a drop-off at a hotel or the airport.
