Discover the breathtaking beauty and wildlife of the Strait of Magellan on this Patagonia horse riding and kayaking tour. The Strait of Magellan connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and separates mainland Patagonia from Tierra del Fuego. The Magellan coast and ocean environments include magnificent landscapes and are home to a variety of animals.

By sea kayak, you could spot dolphins, sea lions, seabirds, whales, and other marine wildlife. The Patagonia horse riding takes you through a wetland and a forest, where you can observe local birds and other animals in their natural habitats. From a lookout point during the tour, you will see the ocean, the snowcaps of the Darwin Mountain Range, Dawson Island, and the islands of Tierra del Fuego.

Tour Information

Duration: 7 hours, 09:00 am to 16:00 pm
Start and end location: Punta Arenas


09:00 am: Pick up at your hotel or hostel in Punta Arenas and drive to the Bay
09:40 am: Arrive to the Bay, 18 miles (29 km) south of Punta Arenas, receive kayak and safety instruction
10:20 am: Begin the kayak journey in a small, shallow river and continue into the Strait of Magellan where it is more likely to spot marine wildlife
12:20 pm: Time to rest and eat a traditional meal for lunch
14:30 pm: Horseback ride of 1.5-2 hours in wetlands and forest, finishing at an amazing lookout with impressive views of the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Dawson Island, and the Darwin Mountain Range
16:00 pm: Return to the starting point, time for a snack and return to Punta Arenas

The itinerary and the duration of the activities can be modified depending on the weather.

  • The weather conditions for this tour are best in the Chilean summer, between November and March. If you are interested in other months, please email us at
  • For your safety, you must be able to swim.
  • Strenuous physical activity is required in deep water.
  • Not recommended for pregnant women and people with different physical abilities
  • Must be at least 14 years old, with authorization and accompanied by a parent or authorized adult
  • Before the tour, please inform us of any illnesses or other medical conditions.
  • Cruise ship passengers:
    • The itinerary can be modified to fit your boat’s docking schedule.
    • If you would like to be picked up at the parking lot where the ships dock, the local operator must pay $10,000 Chilean pesos (about $16 USD) per person to enter, so let us know via email ( if you would like to pay extra to get picked up in the parking lot or meet them (note that we do not receive any commission off of the extra payment, we just pass it directly on to the local guide)
