Ocean Kayak in the Strait of Magellan (Day Trip)

This tour requires a minimum of 3 people

This tour only runs in the Chilean summer (October-May), but email us if you are interested in doing this tour June-September:

  • Ocean kayak the Strait of Magellan seeing sea lions, dolphins, cormorants, skuas and more
  • Relax in an open air hot tub admiring the view of water and mountains
  • Camp on a pristine beach in a remote bay

Enjoy a three day ocean kayak excursion on the southernmost coast through the Strait of Magellan, between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the area where Yaghan and Kaweshkar ancestors navigated. You will sail past the shores of Mount Tarn, which was visited by Charles Darwin in 1834 until reaching Faro San Isidro.  You will spend the night at the Lighthouse Inn and we recommend a relaxing soak in the wood fired, open air, sea water hot tubs where you can enjoy a view of the stars, water and mountains.

On day two you leave Faro San Isidro crossing Bahía el Águila; in one half hour paddling 2.1 km, you arrive at the south end of the Bay in Punta Barcarcel. This small island is a refuge for a variety of seabirds such as cormorants, petrels, seagulls, etc. It is common to find sea lions who swim right up next to the quiet kayaks.  In a small bay called Bahía del Cañón is a small mountain stream where Coihue de Magallanes and Canelo abound.

A half hour paddling from Punta Barcarcel brings you to the south end of Bahía del Indio, an area of small bays. Bahía Bouchage has an excellent beach, with dense forest and a stream, ideal conditions for camping.  On the last day, you’ll return to the Lighthouse Inn for lunch followed by a last paddle to Bahía Voces, where a van will take you back to Punta Arenas.
