On this guided half-day hike just minutes from Puerto Natales, enjoy a short but satisfying trek to the summit of Cerro Dorotea (Dorotea Ridge) for miles of spectacular views. See the magnificent landscape of the Fjord of Last Hope, Montt Gulf, and the Patagonian Steppe.
Observe Andean condors nesting in the ridge’s rocky vertical shelves and flying low overhead. Learn about the region’s explorers and early settlers, as well as the indigenous cultures who have walked the mountains and plains for millennia.
This hike is considered moderate for its sometimes steep and rocky inclines. You’ll have a bilingual trail guide to help you navigate.
You’ll begin your day with a quick private transfer (~10 minutes) from your hotel in Puerto Natales to the trailhead at the Paredes family land. Here, you’ll begin your Cerro Dorotea hike. A climb of approximately 1800 feet (~650 meters), the scenic ridge makes for a short, but breathtaking, ascent.
Your trek to the summit will take about 1.5 hours, and upon arrival, you’ll enjoy spectacular views on all sides. See the Fjord of Last Hope winding through jagged mountains, Montt Gulf leading to the sea, and the Patagonian Steppe extending across Argentina. From the summit, you may get an opportunity to observe Andean condors, which nest in the ridge’s vertical walls and frequently fly overhead searching the mountain and valley for prey.
Your guide talk about region’s history, the early explorers and settlers who first colonized the unforgiving landscape, and the indigenous people who came long before. After enjoying the summit, you’ll continue along the ridge for a look at Puerto Natales from above, before beginning your descent and return to the nearby city.
