On this eight day trip you explore the protected ice fields and glaciers in the Southern Ice Fields of Chile’s national park system. You will visit six of the 49 glaciers in this area, including an entire day spent on Pio XI glacier, the largest in the southern hemisphere. During your stay, walk one hour to the base of a glacier, and weather permitting, kayak through ice fields at three different sights and learn the history of the Kaweshkar people.
You will spend a day visiting Puerto Eden (Jetarktétqal in Kaweshkar ) a village located on the eastern coast of the Wellington Island in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, near the Southern Ice Fields. It is the only populated town surrounded by the pristine landscapes and nature of Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. Of the 150 residents, only 12 are descendants of the Kaweshkar ethnic group and Chile’s National Council for Culture and the Arts has named them Living Human Treasures. Listen to their stories to help preserve their cultural heritage.
You will up anchor at Puerto Natales at 8:00. At 13:00, you will enter the Montañas Canal, where you will visit the Zamudio and Bernal glaciers. Weather permitting, you will disembark and walk about an hour to the base of the glacier. You may also go kayaking in this area, if the weather is good. You will finish the day seeing the Paredes and Alcina glaciers and anchoring at Isla Jaime.
Set sail from Isla Jaime at 6:00 to navigate the Union Inlet and Sarmiento Channel, towards Caleta Amalia (a cove). Weather and time permitting, you will visit the glacier and go kayaking here.
You will sail the Pitts, Concepción, and Wide channels to the Eyre Inlet, arriving in the afternoon at the Pio XI glacier – the largest in the southern hemisphere! You will near the glacier.
