6 Days/5 Nights or 5 Days/4 Nights

Day 1: Monday

7:30 am. Our Touring Bolivia by Boat, Bike & Foot tour starts bright and early! We will meet you at our workshop to set up your bike according to height requirements and make sure that the brake is on the correct side for you. Additionally, we will pass out equipment including: helmets, gloves, goggles, jackets, pants, a waterproof jacket, and knee and elbow pads.

Once everyone is ready, we will load the vehicles and depart for a 3 hour trip to Sorata. Sorata is located at the base of the Illampu and Janq’u Uma moutains (6,368 m and 6,427 m respectively)  and serves as a starting point for both hikers and mountaineers touring Bolivia. Later, we will stop in the town of Achacachi to try some locally-made, deep-fried and delicious Tucumanas (similar to empanadas).

After our snack, we will begin the day’s ride a few kilometers past the Sorata 38 km sign.  As we cross the ridge, the valley will seemingly disappear into the dark abyss. Depending on the experience of the group we will either ride the paved road or try a more challenging ride. Both routes equally guarantee fun!

Once we arrive in Sorata, we will go to Altai Oasis, a family-run lodge in a spectacular, lush valley. In addition to great food, the lodge has a pool and beautiful gardens. Here, you will have some free time to relax and do your own thing.

In the evening, we will meet in the restaurant at 7:30 pm. During dinner, we will have an informal briefing of the trip and get to know each other better. We provide 50 bs (Bolivian currency) towards your meal.

Day 2: Tuesday

We will meet at 6:00 am sharp in the café to enjoy a delicious breakfast that will energize us for a long day of riding. Our driver will meet us soon after at 6:30 am and drive us high into the Andes.

Today’s ride is one of the world’s largest downhill runs. It features a vertical descent of 4,000 m over 65 kilometers on a two track road. Most of the path is pretty smooth, but there are a few rockier, more challenging sections. However, rest assured, if it ever becomes too challenging, the support jeep always travels right behind the group to give rides.

For lunch, we will stop in a small, rustic village for vegetable quinoa soup prepared by local women and scrumptious avocado salad sandwiches made by the guides. We will also enjoy chocolate and local brewed coffee for dessert.

After lunch, the path that follows is much smoother and the ride goes more quickly. Lower altitude here will make it easier for us to breathe and the temperature will warm as we near the basin.

Our accommodations in Consata for the night will be rather humble. Straw beds and cold showers will help us experience authentic Bolivia. Here, your guides will prepare a vegetarian pasta dinner with red wine before settling in for a good night’s sleep.

Day 3: Wednesday

7:30 am. Your energetic and enthusiastic guides will prepare a delicious breakfast of French Toast, homemade chocolate sauce and a variety of fruits with local coffee and tea to give us energy to continue touring Bolivia!

Then we will take a short drive in the 4×4 vehicles along the edge of the river into thicker vegetation and a canopy overhead formed by vines.

As we drive, there will be long stretches of green with the occasional glimpses of a waterfall, a creek or the river from time to time. The ride will be humid and challenging as we travel both uphill and downhill. However, there is no rush so take your time and enjoy the trip.

For lunch, we will have a regional soup in one of the gold mining villages en route. Although the roads near the mining villages are somewhat dirty, we will soon stop next to a crystal clear jungle river where we can wash our bikes and take a dip.

We will be transported higher up from the river where we will bike to our accommodation for the night in Mapiri, a regional gold mining and trading area. After a much-deserved shower we will head into town for an extra delicious dinner!

At night we will let loose, have a few beers and sing karaoke. At the end of the night, we will head back to the rooftop, have a few more beers, and star gaze.

Day 4: Thursday

At 8:00 am, we will depart for a nearby restaurant for breakfast with juice, coffee, or tea. After breakfast, we will walk to the Rio Mapiri nearby where there will be a longboat loaded with our gear. For the next 3 days, we will boat an average of 4 hours daily. Between boating, we will go on several short hikes, and we will also camp two nights in the jungle.

We will take a 3.5 hour boat ride through canyons to the gold boom
town of Guanay where we will eat lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the
river. While we load
supplies for the river trip, we will have some free time to explore. From here we will continue downriver for 1.5 hours to
the first river camp. In the afternoon, there will be an optional hike to a lookout point while we wait for our wonderful chef to prepare us a lovely dinner. After the hike, we will return to camp to eat, have a bonfire, and sleep in tents.

All camping gear (tents, sleeping bags and pads) is supplied. We recommend you bring a flashlight though.

Day 5: Friday

We will eat breakfast at 7:00 am. Then, we will pack up our camp gear before heading off on a 1 hour hike up the side
canyon of the creek to a precious waterfall. After a swim, we will
return to camp, load the boat and continue on down stream. Lunch will be prepared and served on the boat. Before
entering the protected area of Madidi National Park, we will pass several active gold mines.

Once we arrive to our campsite, we will set up while our wonderful chef will make us another fabulous dinner.

After dinner, we will go on a night hike through the jungle. We will enjoy classic camping fun as we roast marshmallows, tell stories and play cards.

Day 6: Saturday

After an early breakfast (7:00 am), will go on a 3.5 hour hike through the lush rainforest.  Then we will cruise about 3
hours down the river on the way to Rurrenabaque where the trip ends.

On the final night, we will gather for one last time to enjoy a fantastic dinner (complete with wine) to celebrate the end of our tour. For those interested in an after party, Moskito Bar is a great place to make some lasting memories with the crew in your final hours together touring Bolivia. We provide 50 bs towards your meal and a free cocktail.
