Highlights

  • Experience an enchanting and impressive expedition with the descendants of gauchos
  • Enjoy a unique adventure on horseback

Description

Duration: 5 days, 4 nights

Availability: November 11th-15th or 17th-21st

Salta’s beauty is difficult to describe. At over 3,000 meters (~9,800 feet) above sea level, there is a valley rich in history and surrounded by colorful mountain ranges and crisscrossed by rivers.

Your horses will be Peruvian Paso crosses, well-trained, steady, and accustomed to the terrain of the high mountain passes. Your only job while riding them will be to enjoy the red-striped mountains and cactus forests of the valley.

Itinerary

You will begin early day in order to enjoy the sights and sounds of the river valley. The first night, you will stay in a small, cozy gaucho home. The following two nights, you will live with a host family in Amblayo – a tiny, remote village in the valley. Here, you will learn about rural life and culture, and enjoy a ride along the river, through the red stone countryside. After riding along pampas-rimmed rivers and cactus forests, your final night will be in a rustic gaucho home. After your trip, you will have a chance to enjoy an authentic peña in Salta to toast the adventure and enjoy local folk music.

Getting There

You will be picked up in Salta and brought to the small town of La Viña, where you will meet your horses and saddle up for the trip. There are flights to Salta from Buenos Aires and busses from various locations.

Dario

Gauchos are skilled horsemen and cowboys originally from the prairies of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and Chile. In rural Argentina, they are revered as heroes and are considered an essential part of Argentinian culture.

Dario is part of a family of gauchos and horse breeders that has inhabited the northern region of Corrientes for more than three generations.

Twenty years ago, when he was in his thirties, he decided to combine his family job as a horse breeder with the mission of spreading the gaucho culture by offering horseback rides to travelers in Salta and Corrientes.

It’s been more than 20 years and Dario has met people from all over the globe and incorporated new routes and cultural exchanges with local communities, fulfilling his goal and providing opportunities for rural and remote families.

A few years ago, he appeared in a documentary from the BBC, where he shared a 5 day Horseback Trip with two British actors and proudly showed them the real Gaucho life in the Taugh Pampas of Northern Argentina.
